3 Tips for Federal Grants

Applying for federal grants requires your department to complete some basic registrations. The FireGrantsHelp team at Lexipol recommends the following order:

Obtain Your Employer Identification Number

Your department is required to have an EIN, also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, to register at SAM.gov, the federal government grant registry. To apply for an EIN, complete the online application on the IRS website.
Register on Login.gov

Login.gov is a secure sign-in service used by the public to sign in to participating government agencies.
- Visit Login.gov
- Enter email address and click Submit
- Access your email and find the message from Login.gov
- Follow prompts to create your Login.gov account and authenticate
Register on SAM.gov

The System for Award Management (SAM) is a government-wide registry for vendors doing business with the federal government.
- Gather the following information:
  - Department start date and fiscal year
  - CAGE code (will be created at this time if you do not have it)
  - Physical address and mailing address
  - Employer Identification Number (EIN)
  - Banking information – routing number, account number, account type
- Visit SAM.gov
- Sign in using Login.gov credentials
- You will now have access to your Workspace
- Click Get Started in the Entity Management box
- You can now register by clicking on the Register Entity box and following the prompts
