Globe has been engaging with its textile suppliers and encouraging them to develop new materials to meet customer demand for non-PFAS alternatives. As of August 2025, with the introduction of the GORE-TEX CROSSTECH® Innovate moisture barrier, Globe customers are now able to order an NFPA 1971-certified ensemble that is made without intentionally added PFAS:
- Outer Shells: The outer shells listed in this online guide all feature a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish with no added PFAS.
- Moisture Barriers: GORE-TEX CROSSTECH® Innovate is a new-to-market non-PFAS moisture barrier from W.L. Gore that is certified to NFPA 1971, 2018 ed. and NFPA 1970(71), 2025 ed., and provides penetration resistance against blood, body fluids, NFPA common chemicals, and water. According to W.L. Gore, GORE-TEX CROSSTECH® Innovate has a total fluorine concentration of no more than 100 ppm upon certification, as defined in NFPA 1970(71). Other moisture barriers listed in this online guide are made with ePTFE, a fluoropolymer that meets broad definitions of PFAS and that provides liquid repellency, breathability, durability, and performance in extreme conditions.
- Thermal Liners: None of Globe’s thermal liners are made with PFAS components.
New materials may perform differently in some respects, which could be important for fire departments to consider as they perform risk assessments and evaluate new options in PPE.
Globe offers composites across a range of performance characteristics and encourages customers to conduct a risk assessment based on the criteria of NFPA 1851, 2020 ed., and select the garment style and materials best suited for their needs.
Globe Distributors can help select the right turnout gear materials, garment style, and particulate-protective solutions for each department.
